Preamble The Morserino32 Player application was asked me by a friend of mine Luciano Blasi, I0JBL, president of the ARI ROMA Ham Radio Club. It was for the last MAKER FAIR ROME 2024 event held in Rome in October 2024.
As it happened in the previous 2023 event, many children, teenagers and adults who never used a telegraph key was able to listen and to send correct Morse code despite they weren't ham radio operators. It was a great success and, as usually, a great credit goes to Willi Kraml, OE1WKL for its great Morserino32 device.
Note: if you are an ham radio operator and are planning to learn the Morse Code I suggest you start using CW Trainer for Morserino.
Morserino32 Player is a very simple utility aimed primarily at children and beginners who want to learn telegraphy in a fun and entertaining way without using a radio. All that is needing is a computer equipped with a sound card, Morserino32 and one or two morse keys.
Let's see it immediately the GUI
It is actually very simple and intuitive. Below the title, you can see the Reception Window. Characters sent by an instructor, by Morserino32 or by a computer are displayed in the same order they are sent. Colors have a different meaning depending on the function used (see the Mode paragraph).
In the lower panel, on the first button row, starting from the left, you will have the following buttons:
- Teacher Mode: learn characters sent by an instructor
- Random Char Mode: learn random characters generated by computer
- Single Word Mode: learn a group of characters typed in by the user
On the second row, you will have the following buttons:
- Settings: – Configure Serial Port number and tone pitch
- Connect/Disconnect:– Enable/Disable the connection with Morserino32
- Enable/Disable Computer Audio: Enable/Disable the computer audio
- WPM: Increase/Decrease the code speed (PARIS scheme). It should match the speed configured on Morserino32.
On the right side, a button for clearing the receive window and a button to exit the program.

CONFIGURATION
In Windows Device Manager, look for the serial port that appears after Morserino32 has been connected to your computer. In the following image, the assigned port is COM3.
In Morserino32 Player Setting Panel configure the COM3 port as shown in the picture below. You can also modify the audio pitch: it is the frequency the computer plays the characters.
Press the Save and Close buttons to save the settings. All these are restored on program restart.
Now set Morserino32 on CW Decoder mode.
then press the Connect button to start working.
If something went wrong a red light will appear (probably the serial port name is wrong or port is busy). In such a case, you have to repeat the config procedure. Pay attention to the serial port name. The most common mistake is entering only its number, instead of its full name: for example you typed 3 instead of COM3.
Let's give a look at the working modes.
TEACHER MODE
Theacher mode works using Morserino32 with two telegraph keys: one used by the instructor and the other used by the student. In this scenario the program starts in the INSTRUCTOR WAITING STATE, highlighted by the orange light.
The instructor sends a character that is displayed in the receive window. Now the program goes into the STUDENT WAITING STATE, highlighted by the blue light.
Using the second key, the student tries to repeat the character sent by the instructor. If the student's transmission is correct, the letter becomes blue and the program goes back in the INSTRUCTOR WAITING STATE (orange light).
If the transmission is wrong, the character is red colored and the computer repeats the sound of the letter sent by the instructor. The program remains in STUDENT WAITING STATE, highlighted by the blue light.
The previous step is repeated until the student's transmission is correct.
RANDOM CHAR MODE
In this mode you can use only one Morse key. The computer sends a random character that is displayed, white colored, in the reception window.
The program waits for the student.
If the code is correct, the letter is blue colored and a new random letter is sent.
NOTE: After a (white) letter is displayed, the program plays its sound. During the sound playback, a red light indicates to wait before going on.
If the code is wrong, the letter is red colored and the program repeats its sound.
The previous step is repeated until the student's transmission is correct.
SINGLE MODE WORD
In this mode you can use only one Morse key. The student writes a word in the box and then press Play button to listen to whole code.
During playback, the current letter is yellow colored . Once playback ends, the program waits for the student sending.
Even in this mode, correct letters are colored in blue. On the contrary, in case of an error, the wrong letter is red colored and its sound is again repeated.
